a passionate environmentalist and biodynamic-permaculture gardener.
She was a mainstream journalist, editor & publisher for 17 years, until, through her
self-study of metaphysics, especially Dr Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy (Spiritual
Science) she learned that our Newtonian materialistic worldview and pursuits are
destroying our health and our Planet.
She has been a full-time volunteer for Nature for the past 15 years. Singapore born,

He is an editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and has also served on numerous editorial boards including the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, ACTA Nutrimenta SINCA, Asia Journal of Food & Agro-Industry, Songklanakarin Journal of Science and Technology, Food Safety Guide, Mahasarakham Journal of Science and Technology, Health Review etc. He has the served on numerous international society boards and national government boards. He is a member of FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on Human Nutrition. He is a president elect of Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society, and is a Vice-President of Asia Vegetarian Union. He has been a fellow of China National Food and Nutrition Consultation Committee, a Standing committee member of the China Food Safety Consultation Committee, and a member of the Zhejiang Food Safety Experts Consultation Committee. He is currently the Director of the Ethics Committee and a member of the Scientific Board, College of Biosystem Engineering and Food Science, Zhejiang University.

He has organized or chaired various international scientific conferences such as the International Symposium on the Evolution of Food Safety and Nutrition, in October 2002, in Hangzhou, China; the Joint ZAST/IUNS/WHO workshop on “Current Patterns and Emerging Challenges of Nutrition cuisine and health”, in October 2003, Hangzhou, China; and the Joint International Clinical Nutrition Conference of the International Union of Nutritional Science (8th ISCN-IUNS) and the Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society (5th APCNS), in Oct 2006, Hangzhou, China.

Duo has published more than 200 scientific papers and 6 books or book chapters. Duo received Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Award in 2007; an Award for the Promotion of Student Nutrition and Health Tasks in 2004 in China; Australian Postgraduate Awards in 1995, 1996 and 1997; a Zhejiang Science and Technology System award from the Science and Technology Association, Zhejiang Province, China; 1st Prize in Natural Science for the paper: “Relationship between platelet phospholipid fatty acid and mean platelet volume in healthy men”, Academic Committee of Natural Science, Zhejiang Province, China. His research group has integrated research themes on nutrition and food safety in some five areas. The first is food bioactivity (anti-inflammation, anti-diabetes, anti-hypertension, anti-cancer, hypo-blood lipids etc) using whole foods, food ingredients, natural products, foods for health and functional foods, through in vitro studies, animal models and human clinical trials. The secondly is food safety evaluation, with an emphasis on the long term safety of foods. Third is the relationship between non-communicable diseases and habitual dietary intake. The fourth area is the evaluation of novel food sand potential natural nutrient resources, through compositional and physiological studies. Finally, his work examines how nutrients, food ingredients and natural products influence the expression of select genes.

PART 1

Dr.Phichai Tovivich was born in Chiengmai, Thailand in 1939. Since 1965 right after obtaining a B.Sc. with Honours in Chemistry from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, he had been teaching chemistry at the same university until he retired in 1998.

At present he is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Neolab International Co., Ltd. The main business of this company is dealing with laboratory furniture including design and manufacturing of scientific laboratory benches, cabinets, fume cupboards and scrubbers etc.

His main interest is not only in chemistry and design of scientific laboratory for safety and ergonomics as well as saving energy. More importantly, he is very keen in campaigning chanting and praying for H.M. the Great King of Thailand (H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej) and for world peace, promoting eternal peace, studying and practicing in spirituality. He has been traveling in almost 30 countries around the world in relation to his various activities. Especially, he traveled a lot during 1977 – 1991 when he worked for UNESCO as the Executive Secretary of the Southeast Asian Network for the Chemistry of Natural Products.

He has been involved with so many charity activities. Just a few examples: In scientific academy, he used to be the president of the Chemical Society of Thailand during 2005 and 2006,  under the Patronage of H.M. the King in 1990 – 1991. He was one of the Founders and Executive Committee of the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the Patronage of H.M. the King during 1983 up to 1996. He has been associated with the Professor Dr.Tab Nilanidhi Foundation in giving awards and scholarships to the excellent science students in all the universities in Thailand since its establishment in 1968.

At present he is an Advisor of so many organizations such as the Preecha – Prapai Amatyakul Science Foundation, the Distance Learning Foundation, the Science Alumni Association and the Rachapruek College etc. He has also been serving the country as one of the working committees on the consideration of machines, materials and equipment for the Protection of Environment (under the Ministry of Science and Technology) in which he is the only one who has been working continuously since its establishment in 1983 up to the present day.

After teaching chemistry for more than 30 years at Chulalongkorn University, he diverged some what from the path of true science and embarked on a more holistic journey. He was appointed to be the Samnak Poo Sawan Fellow Society which is one of the most popular sacred houses in Thailand in 1992. What he has been trying to do is to follow up the activities created by Dr.Suchart Kosolkitiwong, the World Peace Envoy, who became a monk namely Ariyawanso Bhikhu in 1991 and passed away in 2005. Among the high lights of the activities are related to world peace, environment, inter-religions and vegetarianism, etc.

He has published several books in Thai for examples; “A Handbook of Chemical Safety”, “Star War”, “Aliens Ways of Living” He also warned the people publicly through mass media; newspaper, radios and TV about the unhealthy of the seasoning powder Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water. One of his most popular booklets “AD1999: the World in Disaster; B.E.2542: the Ways for Survival” in which his prophecies including Tsunami and other natural disasters were printed and distributed more than 1 million copies during 1998 – 1999. He was called by the “Daily News” in Sri Lanka as “The Modern-Day Nostradamus” when he visited to Colombo in 1999.

He was listed in the International Who’s Who of Intellectuals 1990 – 1991 by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK and also in “Who’s Who in Thailand”, Executive/CEO, APEC special edition, 2004.

He was awarded several prizes such as the Outstanding Vegetarian of the Year 1998 from the Vegetarian Society, Mumbai, India; the Outstanding Alumnus of the Science Faculty, Chulalongkorn University and a Certificate of Merit from the Thai Volunteers for Social Foundation in 2002. He was also awarded Outstanding Man of the Year 2003 and Outstanding CEO of the Year 2004 both by the Foundation for Thai Society. He was granted the Nataji Subash Chandra Bose National Award for Excellence on Peace Propagation by the Jagruthi Kiran Foundation, Nagpur, India on the Netaji’s 108 Birthday 23th January 2005.

JD was a pioneer of vegetarianism on the internet, having been actively involved since 1994. He maintained the first websites for VSUK, VIVA and EVU as well being involved with many others in the mid-90s. He built the first IVU website in November 1995. In 1997, at the Council meeting in Bussolengo, Italy, he was co-opted onto the IVU International Council, then in January 1999 at the World Congress in Chiang Mai, Thailand, he was elected as a council member. However, from January 1, 2000, he has been employed part-time as the IVU webmaster, and therefore resigned from the elected position – but has been co-opted onto all Council sessions in an advisory, non-voting, capacity.

In 2006 he was designated as IVU Manager, to include responsibility for members and supporters via the IVU Virtual Office, and the general planning and development of IVU. The last few years have seen some major reorganisations to enable IVU to maintain its leading role in world vegetarianism into the 21st century, including imporvements in financial and business links. He is particularly proud to have had the opportunity to support the first vegetarian congresses ever to be held in Africa, thanks to funds raised by IVU.

Throughout this time he has also been researching the history of IVU, partly for presentations at the centenary congress in 2008, along with general vegetarian history, all supported by members of the ivu-history email group. The results of this now run to about 10,000 historical files on the IVU website.

Over the years with IVU he has attended congresses and other events in many countries, including Brazil, China, Germany, India, Italy, Indonesia, Scotland, Singapore, Switzerland and Thailand.
